Collecting Data for the Problem Behavior

Gathering Data for the Problem Behavior At the point when you are composing a FBA (Functional Behavior Analysis) you should gather information. There are three sorts of data you will pick: Indirect Observational Data, Direct Observational Data, and if conceivable, Experimental Observational Data. A genuine Functional Analysis will incorporate an Analog Condition Functional Analysis. Dr. Chris Borgmeier of Portland State University has made various supportive structures accessible online to use for this information assortment. Aberrant Observational Data: The principal activity is to talk with guardians, study hall educators and other people who have had continuous duty regarding overseeing the youngster being referred to. Be certain that you give every partner the practical portrayal of the conduct, to be certain it is the conduct you are seeing. You will need to investigate instruments for gathering this information. Many survey groups evaluative structures are intended for guardians, educators and different partners to make observational information that can be utilized to help understudy success.â Direct Observation Data You should figure out what sorts of information do you need. Does the conduct show up much of the time, or is it the force that is terrifying? Does it appear to happen all of a sudden? Can the conduct be diverted, or does it escalate when you intercede? In the event that the conduct is visit, you will need to utilize a recurrence or disperse plot instrument. A recurrence instrument can be a halfway interim apparatus, that records how as often as possible a conduct shows up during a limited period. The outcomes will be X events every hour. A dissipate plot can help recognize designs in the event of practices. By matching certain exercises with the event of practices, you can recognize the two precursors and perhaps the result that is strengthening the conduct. On the off chance that the conduct endures quite a while, you may need a length measure. The disperse plot may give you data about when it occurs, a span measure will tell you to what extent a conduct will in general last. You will likewise need to make an ABC observational structure accessible for any individuals who are watching and gathering the data. At a similar time, be certain you have operationalized the conduct, depicting the practices geology so every spectator is searching for the equivalent thing. This is called between onlooker reliability.â Simple Condition Functional Analysis You may find that you can distinguish the predecessor and outcome of conduct with direct perception. Here and there to affirm it, an Analog Condition Functional Analysis would be useful. You have to set up the perception in a different room. Set up a play circumstance with unbiased or favored toys. You at that point continue to embed each factor in turn: a solicitation to accomplish work, expulsion of a supported thing or you disregard the kid. In the event that the conduct shows up when you are available in a nonpartisan setting, it might be consequently fortifying. A few kids will hit themselves in the head since they are exhausted, or in light of the fact that they have an ear contamination. On the off chance that the conduct shows up when you leave, it is probably for consideration. In the event that the conduct shows up when you request that the kid do a scholarly errand, it is for evasion. You will need to record your outcomes, on paper as well as on a tape. Time to Analyze! When you have gathered enough data, you will be prepared to proceed onward to your examination, which will concentrate on the ABC of the conduct (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence.)

Consequences of Ethnicity in Nigeria

Impact OF ETHNICITY IN NIGERIA CHAPTER 1. 0 Presentation Nigeriaâ isâ byâ farâ the generally populated of Africa’s nations, with more than one-seventh of the continent’s individuals. The individuals have a place with various ethnic gatherings. These gatherings give the nation a rich culture, however they additionally present significant difficulties to country building. Ethnic conflict has tormented Nigeria since it picked up autonomy in 1960. Authoritatively known as the ‘Federal Republic of Nigeria’, she hasâ aâ federal type of government and is partitioned into 36 states and an administrative capital territory.Lagos, (in the past the capital of Nigeria) is the monetary and social focus situated along the coast, and occupied significantly by the Yoruba-talking clan. It is likewise the country’s biggest city (as far as populace). The legislature moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991 in the expectation of making a national capital where none of the country’s ethnic gatherings would be prevailing. Theâ land size areaâ of Nigeria is roughly 923,768 sq km (356,669 sq mi).It was home to ethnically based realms and ancestral networks before it turned into an European settlement. Despite European contact that started in the sixteenth century, these realms and networks kept up their self-governance until the nineteenth century. The pilgrim time started decisively in the late nineteenth century, when Britain merged its standard over Nigeria. In 1914 the British combined their northern and southern protectorates into a solitary state called the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. Nigeria got free of British standard in 1960.After autonomy Nigeria experienced continuous overthrows and significant stretches of dictatorial military principle somewhere in the range of 1966 and 1999, when a vote based non military personnel government was set up Nigeria is extremely wealthy in crude materials like unrefined petroleum, tin, iron and so forth yet is exclusively subject to raw petroleum wh ich is a significant wellspring of salary for the nation. While oil riches has financed significant interests in the country’s framework, Nigeria stays among the world’s most unfortunate nations as far according to capita salary. Oil incomes drove the legislature to overlook agribusiness, bringing about reliance on nourishment importation.Fig 1. 1 MAP OF NIGERIA SHOWING THE 36 STATES 1. 1 The individuals of Nigeria's decent variety, both in â€Å"tongue† and â€Å"tribe† makes it an exceptionally troublesome area to expose to exact arrangement. This has prompted the inclination among numerous researchers to concentrate on the three significant ethnic or geographic zones in the nation viz the Hausa-Fulani (Northern Nigeria), the Yoruba (Western Nigeria) and the Igbo (Eastern Nigeria). These geographic zones are not at all exclusively involved by the three ethnic gatherings. A plenty of littler socio-ethnic gatherings might be situated in these zones. The highest population densities are in the Igbo heartland in south-eastern Nigeria, regardless of poor soils and overwhelming displacement. The seriously cultivated zones around and including a few significant urban areas of the Hausa ethnic gathering particularly Kano, Sokoto, and Zaria in the north are likewise thickly populated. Different zones of high thickness incorporate Yorubaland in the southwest, the focal Jos Plateau, and the Tiv country in Benue State in the south focal locale. Densities are moderately low in the dry upper east and in many pieces of the center belt.Ecological factors, including the commonness of maladies, for example, resting disorder, conveyed by the tsetse fly, and chronicled factors, particularly the heritage of pre-frontier slave attacking, help clarify these low densities (Encarta, 2009). Table 1. 1: Statistics of Nigeria Population| 138,283,240 (2008 estimate)| Population density| 152 people for each sq km 393 people for every sq mi (2008 estimate)| Urban populace distribution| 48 percent (2005 estimate)| Rural populace distribution| 52 percent (2005 estimate)| Largest urban communities, with population| Lagos, 11,100,000 (2005 gauge) Ibadan, 3,570,000 (2007 estimate)Ogbomosho, 861,300 (2007 estimate)| Official language| English| Chief strict affiliations| Muslim, 50 percent Christian, 40 percent Indigenous convictions, 10 percent| Life expectancy| 47. 8 years (2008 estimate)| Infant mortality rate| 94 passings for each 1,000 live births (2008 estimate)| Literacy rate| 70. 7 percent (2005 estimate)| Source: Encarta Encyclopedia (2009) 1. 2 Social issues Wealthâ andâ powerâ areâ distributed unevenly in Nigerian culture. This is because of a few variables including defilement, political flimsiness, and joblessness, in the midst of others. The incredible lion's share of Nigerians, engrossed with day by day battles to procure a living, have not many material belongings and minimal possibility of improving their parcel. In the in terim, boss, rich traders, lawmakers, and high-positioning government workers frequently collect and display gigantic riches, which to a degree is normal and acknowledged in the Nigerian culture. A large portion of these tip top keep up power through systems of support: They make sure about and circulate work and get political help in return. The framework takes into account some redistribution of salary since benefactors regularly pay for things, for example, school charges and marriage costs for family members, network advancement, and noble cause work. Economicâ inequalityâ has an extreme impact on wellbeing, particularly for youngsters. One-fifth of Nigerian youngsters kick the bucket before the age of five, basically from treatable ailments, for example, jungle fever, measles, challenging hack, looseness of the bowels, and pneumonia. Short of what one-portion of newborn children are vaccinated against measles, and ailing health influences in excess of 40 percent of kids under the period of five.Adults are similarly influenced, in spite of the fact that with less savage outcomes. Just 20 percent of rustic Nigerians and 52 percent of urban Nigerians approach safe water. 33% have no entrance to medicinal services basically on the grounds that they live excessively far from facilities or other treatment communities. Numerous others can't bear the cost of the expenses charged by centers. Whileâ averageâ incomes are higher and demise rates lower in urban communities, urban destitution is as unavoidable as rustic neediness. Secure, well-paying employments are rare, in any event, for those with extensive instruction. Nourishment is ordinarily expensive.Housing, as well, is exorbitant regardless of its simple quality, inciting the poor to construct fundamental houses in shantytowns. Sewage removal frameworks in many urban areas are additionally fundamental or crude, with contaminated streams, wells, side of the road channels, and different waterways expanding t he danger of irresistible infection. Industry, cars, and the consuming of fuel-wood further dirty air and water. Crime in Nigeria rose in the mid-1990s because of joblessness, monetary decay, and social imbalance, which are abetted by wasteful and degenerate police and customs forces.More than half of all offenses are burglaries, thefts, and break-ins, albeit furnished burglaries are additionally noticeable. Nigeria is a significant conductor for drugs moving from Asia and Latin America to business sectors in Europe and North America. Enormous scope Nigerian misrepresentation rings have focused on specialists in different pieces of the world. Nigeriaâ hasâ beenâ wracked by intermittent brutal conflicts among ethnic and strict gatherings since the 1990s. The purposes for these conflicts have changed from neighborhood political questions to clashes between fundamentalist Muslims and Christians or moderate Muslims. In numerous cases, nearby metro or strict pioneers have control led these contentions for political addition. 1. 3 Ethnicity: The Ethnic Composition of Nigeria Ethnicity is a term not handily characterized and for legitimate comprehension of the idea related terms requires depiction; an ethnic gathering is viewed as a casual intrigue bunch whose individuals are unmistakable from the individuals from other ethnic gatherings inside the bigger society since they share family relationship, strict and etymology ties (Cohen, 1974). Ethnicism is another related idea used to mean ‘ethnic loyalty’ (Pepple, 1985).The idea of devotion here demonstrates readiness to help and follow up for the ethnic gathering. In this way, ethnic dependability or ethnicism as a rule includes a level of commitment and is regularly joined by a rejective demeanor towards those viewed as pariahs I. e. individuals from other ethnic gathering (Salawu and Hassan, 2011). In this way the term Ethnicity can be characterized as the connections among individuals from numer ous differing gatherings (Nnoli, 1978). Nigeria is a general public with various ethnic gatherings, religions, dialects, societies and institutional arrangements. As a heterogeneous society of a few ethnic gatherings, Nigerians are hence portrayed by gatherings, wants, convictions, values, customs, fears and so forth. These assorted varieties in national life show in a few different ways including; music, language, culture, move, convictions, religion and so on. The way that more than 300 recognized language bunches exist in Nigeria has made some disarray as one may compare every language bunch with an ethnic gathering (Adejuyibem 1983) and along these lines show up at more than 300 ethnic groups. As Iwaloye and Ibeanu (1997) and Anugwom (1997) have contended, be that as it may, dialects and ethnic gatherings don't really correspond. One language might be spoken by more than one ethnic gathering and one ethnic gathering may have etymological varieties of a similar root language. Besid es, while language might be one of the significant elements for characterizing an ethnic gathering, some ethnic gatherings in Nigeria may have lost their unique semantic roots, while holding their personality, because of extreme association with bigger socio-ethnic groups. In a similar vein, numerous ethnic gatherings may utilize a similar language to case correspondence, just like the instance of the littler ethnic gatherings in the North of Nigeria, where Hausa has become pretty much a most widely used language. Hence, it has been demonstrated that there is no immediate connection among language and ethnic gathering in Nigeria. In this way, the 56 ethnic gatherings distinguished by Iwaloye and Ibeanu (1997) as the current ethnic gatherings in contemporary Nigeria are embraced. It is I

Arguments for and Against Horse Slaughter

While animal advocates argue against horse slaughter, some horse breeders and owners say that horse slaughter is a necessary evil. According to The Morning News, â€Å"a recent national poll found that almost 70 percent of Americans support a federal ban on horse slaughter for human consumption.† As of May 2009, there are no slaughterhouses killing horses for human consumption in the United States. There is now a federal bill pending that would prohibit horse slaughter in the US and would prohibit the transport of live horses for slaughter. While this federal bill is pending, several individual states are considering horse slaughterhouses. A Montana bill allowing horse slaughter and protecting potential slaughterhouse owners became law in April 2009. A bill modeled on the Montana law is now pending in Tennessee. Slaughter for Human Consumption Horses were being slaughtered for human consumption in the US as recently as 2007. In 2005, Congress had voted to withhold funding for USDA inspections of horse meat. This move should have stopped horse slaughter because the meat cannot be sold for human consumption without USDA inspections, but the USDA responded by adopting new rules that allowed the slaughterhouses to pay for the inspections themselves. A 2007 court ruling ordered the USDA to stop the inspections. Horses Still Being Slaughtered Although horses are no longer slaughtered for human consumption in the US, live horses are still shipped to foreign slaughterhouses. According to Keith Dane, Director of Equine Protection for the Humane Society of the US, about 100,000 live horses are shipped to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses each year, and the meat is sold in Belgium, France, and other countries. A lesser-known issue is that of horse slaughter for pet food and for zoos to feed to carnivores. According to Dane, these facilities are not required to be inspected by the USDA, so statistics are not available. The existence of such facilities usually goes unnoticed until there are a cruelty allegation and investigation. The International Society for the Protection of Exotic Animal Kind and Livestock, Inc. alleges that one such slaughterhouse in New Jersey kills the horses in an inhumane manner, and the case is still under investigation. According to Dane, most major pet food companies do not use horse meat, so there’s little chance of buying cat or dog food that supports horse slaughter. There are many reasons a breeder or owner may decide to sell a specific horse for slaughter, but on a macro level, the problem is overbreeding. Arguments For Horse Slaughter Some view horse slaughter as a necessary evil, to humanely dispose of unwanted horses. Unlike dogs and cats, unwanted horses cannot be dropped off at the local animal shelter. Sanctuaries for horses do exist, but there are not enough of them. Euthanasia is not always financially feasible. Having the horse humanely euthanized and then having the body of a 1,200-pound animal disposed of or transported to a rendering plant is expensive, sometimes prohibitively so. Rendering plants that turn horses into fertilizer and industrial products will accept carcasses, but do not pay for them. Some argue that the alternative to horse slaughter is neglect and abandonment. Horse slaughter proponents argue that horses should be treated no differently from cows, pigs or chickens, and there is no reason horses should not be slaughtered for human consumption. Arguments Against Horse Slaughter Animal rights activists do not believe in killing any animals for food, but there are several arguments that apply specifically to horses. Horse slaughter increases prices and profits for horse breeding. If there is no profitable or easy way to dispose of unwanted horses, fewer horses will be bred. As reported in the Morning News, Before slaughterhouses closed, ranchers knew they could get $1 per pound for the meat. The same meat is now worth only about 20 cents per pound[...] Ranchers are also simply getting out of the horse business, said Ross Lockhart, owner of Stockman’s Pride in Bentonville. He used to raise registered quarter horses but hasn’t bred anything for the past two years. Many Americans believe horses are special and should be treated more like companion animals than livestock. Neglect and abandonment do not increase when slaughterhouses close. According to the International Fund for Horses: California banned horse slaughter in 1998. California has experienced no increase in abuse case, and even noted a decrease 3 years following the ban. During the 4 years that [the Cavel slaughterhouse] was closed, Illinois saw a noticeable decrease in abuse and/or neglect cases. Texas, which had the only two slaughter plants in 2003, had among the nations highest rates of cruelty and theft. Some believe that horse slaughter is unusually cruel. At some slaughterhouses, horses are first stunned with a captive bolt gun, then bled to death. However, the horses are sometimes improperly stunned and are sometimes skinned and bled while still conscious. Allowing horse slaughter creates another source of profit for thoroughbred breeders, thereby supporting horse racing, to which many animal advocates object. Several major horse racetracks oppose horse slaughter. There are about 9 million domestic horses in the US, and approximately one percent of that number are sent to foreign slaughterhouses each year. If shipping live horses for slaughter were banned, that relatively small number of horses could be absorbed by the horse community in the US. The Upshot Whether prohibiting the export of live horses for slaughter will lead to neglect and abandonment remains to be seen, especially in an economy where foreclosures threaten all types of companion animals. However, several major racetracks oppose horse slaughter and taking away an incentive for breeding or overbreeding is a powerful argument against horse slaughter.

Neighborhoods And Violent Crime A Multilevel Study Of...

Neighborhoods and Violent Crime: A Multilevel study of Collective Efficacy Research Question The authors hypothesized in their study that concentrated disadvantage would decrease and residential stability would increase the collective efficacy of a neighborhood. In the study, concentrated disadvantage and residential stability were examined to determine if there is a relationship with interpersonal violence. It was also hypothesized that collective efficacy has some sort of an effect on neighborhood stratification (Sampson et al., 1997). In-depth examination of the data The study examined data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN). They created 847 census tracts to create 343 neighborhood clusters. The†¦show more content†¦Measures There were several measures used in this study. One was informal social control. This was measured using a five-point Likert scale. â€Å"Residents were asked about the likelihood (‘would you say it is very likely, likely, neither likely nor unlikely, unlikely, or very unlikely’) that their neighbors could be counted on to intervene in various ways if (i) children were skipping school and hanging out on a corner, (ii) children were spray-painting graffiti on a local building, (iii) children were showing disrespect to an adult, (iv) a fight broke out in front of their house, and (v) the fire station closes to their home was threatened with budget cuts† (Sampson et al., 1997, 919-920). The second is social cohesion and trust. Social cohesion and trust was measured by a five-point Likert scale as well. They were asked how strongly they agree to the following statements: â€Å"people around here are willing to help their neighbors, this a close knit neighborhood, people in this neighborhood can be trusted, people in the neighborhood generally don’t get along with each other and people in this neighborhood don’t share the same values† (Sampson et al., 1997, 920). Violence was also measured. Violence was measured in three ways. The first was asking the residents how often certain situations occur in the neighborhood. Examples include a fight when a person used a weapon or if a violent argument occurred between neighbors. The second way is personal victimization. The

Analyse The Case Of Diabetes Patient Julie †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Analyse The Case Of Diabetes Patient Julie. Answer: Brief Overview of the Case: The case at hand, suggests that Julie is currently suffering from Diabetes 2, which is not only affecting her physical health, but is also affecting her mental stability and emotional well-being. Starting with the diagnosis, Julies life has remarkably changed. From being an administrative assistance in the past, she has been reduced to a crippled person suffering from ill-health, battling with the problem of weight gain as well as the anxiety caused by the loss of a normal, carefree life she used to lead earlier. Obesity is a very common condition of almost any patient suffering from Diabetes 2, and in fact 85% of the patients are uncontrollably obese or overweight. However, Julie is unable to reconcile herself with the fact that she has adopted various strategies to combat her weight gain issue, and yet has been able to do nothing about it. This is impacting her motivation negatively, and this loss of motivation is highly undesirable in case of a Diabetes patient, as it is an import ant tool needed for efficient management of the patients with Diabetes 2. In controlling diabetes as well as managing weight, self-care behaviour of the patient can only help the patient control diabetes through strict adherence, which however can be impacted by the patient apathy, characterized with lack of initiative and motivation. Description of Problems: As stated by Grover et al., (2015), motivation and self-regulation plays the most significant role in consideration with management of weight and other related behaviours. Leading a predominantly sedentary live has become a regular activity of people in the recent time. Accordingly, it is justifiable to adapt certain psychological as well as other self-regulatory features in the behaviour of a person in order to be motivated and control weight. According to the Theory of Planned behaviour, there is predictive power to and there can be changes in the behaviour of a person if the person wants. There are certain norms and individualistic intentions that actually decide the behaviour of a person (Kemps, Tiggemann, Hollitt, 2014). If the situation of Julie Green is taken into consideration, it can be said that she has certain responsibilities to perform with respect to her husband and children. Obesity is indeed a fatal disorder and that she has to be cautious enough to understand the im portance of losing weight and leading a healthy life. It is only her intensions and will that would help her to overcome from the present situation. The psychological theory, Theory of Self-actualisation also states that there is a need to understand the potentiality of each person to be focused on a particular arena (Kemps, Tiggemann, Hollitt, 2014). It is important for Julie Green to understand the present situation and be prompt enough to come down to a particular approach that would help her to improve her present health condition. As evident that Julie was also suffering from stress due to her health issue, according to the stress and coping theory, she would cope-up with the situation if she manages to overcome the current health problems that she is facing. From an emotional perspective, it should be noted that Diabetes 2 is a chronic health problem, that is accompanied by obesity and other obesity related problems, such as partial disability, that can potentially impact the mental stability of the patient. In the present case, Julie is experiencing a persistent feeling of loss of motivation, a bitter feeling of anxiety and depression as well as loss of self-esteem because of her overweight and her helpless condition in managing the same. It is a well-known fact that anyone who suffers from diabetes and depression have poorer metabolic as well as glycemic control which again, in turn, is claimed to intensify the symptoms of depression. While comprehending the emotional problem of Julie, it is important to note that she is emotionally unstable primarily because of the diagnosis of the disease itself, which she finds to be incurable. Now, the rigour of managing the chronic disease itself is emotionally destabilizing her, as she is experie ncing a feeling of powerlessness in controlling her situation. Next, she currently weighs 120kg, which is adding to her depressed mood as well. Further, what is worsening the situation for her is that Julie is also suffering from other health issue related complications associated with Diabetes, such as partial disability and walking problems, which has created a feeling of despair, hopelessness, anxiety as well as loss of interest in daily activities. Analysis of the Case History and Factors Leading to the Problem: Mrs. Green has been refereed to me after she has complained of going through an emotional turmoil regarding her weight gain issues. It is seen that she has been overweight for a quite a large period of time and she has even tried her best to change her diets to reduce her weight. She has found no result and instead she has been further affected by diabetes and pain in her joints. All these had added to her physical discomfort and mental instability. She had not been able to experience any positive outcome form her diet plan and moreover adding to het physical disabilities like walking with help of stick has affected her motivation and she no longer feels the urge to get back in shape. This case history of hers can be explained by the help of trans-theoretical theory which described her behaviour in five important steps. The main issues that had affected her motivation have been identified in the fourth and last stage of the theory which will be discussed in the following paragraph. The first stage of weight loss is that here an overweight individual has no intention to change the lifestyle probably as they see no reason or benefits of doing so (Phelan et al., 2015). However, Mrs. Green overcame it and reached the next stage which is the contemplation stage where the individual reaches a conscious decision to lose weight. This stag was successfully attended by Julie as well. The next stage is the preparation stage where the individuals sees benefit behind taking initiatives to lose weight (Katterman et al., 2014). Here, Julie also expected to get rewards in the form of losing her weight and so he prepared herself with such a motivation to lose weight. In the action stage also, Julie tried to set goals and take actions by taking in each and every kind of diet which she believed would reduce her weight. However it was in vain and this led her to relapse back into the first and second phase again and again. Staying in action plan for a long time makes an individual to lose motivation as stated by researchers and the same had happened with Julie (Dombrowski et al., 2014). The maintenance stage is the stage where individuals maintain their good habits which they have developed by changing their bad habits. This stage was a total failure as the previous action stage was not properly conducted by Julie. The main reason for the failure of the motivation was that she was not getting proper results for the diet plan she had taken. This was the outcome mainly because she might not have followed evidence based diet plan according to her individual requirement. She might not have followed a complete plan which would have aligned with her goal properly. Therefore inappropriate diet plan which she had perceived as the correct diet plan for her might have failed her and she lost motivation for that (Hardcastle et al., 2013). Moreover, it is also seen that while she was failing in her attempt to reduce weight, she was affected by diabetes which gave her further troubles as he developed join pain and head to use sticks for walking at an age of 43. This physical pain affected her mental strength as well. Moreover she has no role figure to be encouraged with as all her family members except her youngest child was overweight. She got into a phase of depression for all these reason that affected her motivation entirely. She could see no way out and in course of time she developed the feeling that she has no way out of the situation. Hence, all the factors have to be judged properly before setting up a care plan for her for the best outcomes (Franz et al., 2015). Treatment Plan for Julie Depressive symptoms are common in case of the patients who are suffering from diabetes mellitus (Nouwen et al., 2010). This depressive symptom lays a burden on the family, patient and the health care system. In case of Julie, the rate of depression is assumed to be more because at present she is overweight, unemployed and is suffering from extreme joint pain. Psychological therapies are regarded to be the best for the treatment of the depression which Julie is experiencing at present. Such psychological therapies are devoid of any harmful side-effects as they do not employ the use of antidepressant drugs. The most common therapy that is advised for the treatment of depression is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It is a short term intervention therapy in behaviour activation which eases the negative thoughts. Report on GlaxoSmithKlines Leadership Management Framework

Executive Summary GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been facing numerous management challenges since its inception in 2000. This has culminated in huge court fines and a reputation on the verge on destruction. Additionally, the company faces huge operational challenges despite vast resources spread across the globe. Many pundits attribute this crisis at GSK to weak leadership.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Report on GlaxoSmithKline’s Leadership Management Framework specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This paper looks into management structure at GSK with the aim of dissecting the type of leadership style employed. In light of this dissection, the author recommends the most effective leadership style to steer GSK to the next level and to enable it to handle previous management misjudgements. The author finds that Transactional Leadership style has been prevalent at GSK for quite some time. This leadership style is attributed to managerial pitfalls at GSK. The author recommends use of transformational style of leadership. Transformational leaders are dynamic, creative, proactive, and have the ability to save the company from itself. While Transformational Leaders show sensitivity to people’s needs, develop visionary objectives, and take risks after taking the right precautions, transactional leaders shy away from risks and employ short cuts to amass short-term gains. Transformational leaders, the author finds out, are agents of change and have exceptional skills for winning the support of their followers. Experts recommend that companies that are on the verge of collapse should employ transformational leaders to help the situation. While the author concedes this is the best style, he takes note of the need to use all styles interchangeably in the management’s structure of GSK. Katz model is one such interview tool that the author recommends. The company should also revise the pro cess of identifying immeasurable leadership qualities. This will improve the image of GSK and put the company in the path of reputational and managerial health. Introduction GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a British multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Brentford, London, with operations in USA’s Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. GSK has been implementing different leadership strategies to overcome the impact of competition in the global pharmaceutical industry. This has been imperative to the company since it has considerably optimized the population of its global clients. Nevertheless, GSK’s inability to implement leadership strategies appropriately has resulted in a series of operational challenges.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Formation and Global Expansion GlaxoSmithKline was founded in the year 2000, following the merger of SmithKline B eecham and GlaxoWellcome. The following year, GSK purchased Block Drug for US$1.24 Billion. In 2006, the company acquired CNS Inc. a US-based consumer healthcare company, for US$566. Following the CNS Inc. acquisition, GSK increased its range of products and realized extra sales of  £81 million. Additionally, in the same year, GSK invested  £8 million in a joint venture with Shionogi Co., Ltd (GSK Annual Report, 2008). Thereafter, GSK opened its first research centre in China affirming its commitment to invest globally. This centre majorly focused on producing drugs for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases at first. In other global investments, GSK has focussed massively on malaria research. It has specifically been carrying out clinical trials of a new malaria vaccine, RTS, since 2008. It intends to continue with the trials until 2014 and test more than 15,000 children (Our History, n. d.). Mission and Corporate Social Responsibility GSK’s vision is to help the less privileged members of the society. In 2009, it announced plans to cut drug prices in at least 50 of the poorest nations, invest part of its profits from the undeveloped nations in improving medical infrastructure, and encourage new drug development in those nations. During the same period, the company acquired an Argentine pharmaceuticals company Laboratories Phoenix. This centre specializes in the development and sales of generic products. GSK entered into a joint venture with Pfizer and created ViiV Healthcare. Subsequently, the company announced its acquisition of Maxi nutrition in 2010. Moreover, it announced plans to invest in manufacturing plants in Ulverston in Northern England. According to official reports, GSK employs over 97,000 people globally to handle research and development projects. The company sells its products in about 70 countries (Our Mission and Strategy, n. d.). GSK is committed to offer medical products to its global clients more conveniently. GSK has outsta nding Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. According to the company’s CEO, GSK plans to get rid of a disease that has been afflicting humanity for centuries. Hence, the company plans to donate Albendazole drugs, as much as needed. GSK has been short-listed for the Worldaware Award. It received this award because of its efforts to eradicate malaria in Kenya. Apart from this achievement, UK Corporate Citizenship Index ranked the company as a leading donator in 2006 (Our Mission and Strategy, n. d.). GSK, notably, endeavours to give back part of its profits to the society. GSK’s Operational Challenges Despite the company’s outstanding operations and management systems, it has faced several controversies over the past ten years. Most of the challenges resulted from managerial mistakes. The major mistake was the mismanagement of an advertisement regarding Ribena production components. GSK has been producing Ribena, a popular black currant fruit drink, for a l ong time. The company misadvised consumers to believe that the juice is a rich source of vitamin C. However, two 14-year old students, Anna Devathsan and Jenny Suo, while engaging in a science assignment, discovered that the drink contained almost no traces of vitamin C. The matter was made public on Fair Go, a consumer fair trade show.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Report on GlaxoSmithKline’s Leadership Management Framework specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Following the controversy, the Commerce Commission took over the case and confirmed that the pupil’s findings were accurate. GSK was sued and pleaded guilty to 15 charges relating to the case, which resulted in fines amounting NZ$217,000. However, the company maintained that it did not harbour ill motives and that the advertisement claim was based on certain testing procedures that had since been corrected (Outterson, 2012). In 2012, GSK grap pled with yet another controversy relating to a health care fraud settlement in the U.S. The company was apparently engaging in illegal promotion of prescription drugs. In addition, GSK could not provide adequate safety for private data. It was also accused of giving doctors bribes and promoting the use of medicines for treatments for which they were not approved. The government had launched investigations after learning of the illegal acts from whistleblowers (Thomas, n. d.). The company was found guilty and repaid a $3 billion settlement. This incident had a severe negative impact on the company and its management. GSK has also been facing criticism from animal rights activists. The activists believe that the company is a consumer of services from Huntingdon Life Sciences, a controversial animal testing company. Reports indicate that in 2005, some of the activists donated a bomb containing explosives on the doorstep of Paul Blackburn, the corporate controller of GSK, and caused da mages (Lang Chu, 2006). The extremists were not pleased with GSK for collaborating with Huntingdon Life Sciences. Management of the Operational Challenges Consequences of the Challenges GSK has faced monumental operational challenges over the past 10 years. The pharmaceutical company has paid the highest amount of court fines relating to trade misconduct in the last few years (Thomas, n. d.). The controversies portray the company in bad light (Field, Holden, and Lawlor, 2002). Its vision, objectives and mission statements are positive and obliging in helping the world to improve health and education standards. Additionally, the company is committed to bettering the quality of human life by enabling people to live longer and feel better (Our Mission and Strategy, n. d.). GSK is working with partners such as Pfizer to provide financial aid and reduce drug price for the poor. The company’s mission is to reach out to the global population and serve them more effectively and effic iently. However, the numerous court cases and accusations against the company have a negative impact on its overall operations. The cases, in addition, have a negative effect on the consumer’s perception about the company’s products.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More They (consumers) might concentrate more on the company’s unethical strategies rather than the benefits of the products. If the management fails to take urgent action, the company might soon begin to operate on credit, ultimately collapse, and go bankrupt. Owing to the ineffective team of leaders, the former scenario is possible. Effective Management of the Operational Challenges GSK ought to take action and reform its leadership styles. Research has shown that effectiveness is measured depending on the people’s achievements and their skills and behaviour. The measurement is done by comparing the actual results and behaviours with the expectations relating to the achievements and behaviours of participants (Field, Holden, and Lawlor, 2002). GSK has vast resources at its disposal. By contrast, GSK has been losing billions of dollars in paying fines arising from careless management. The amount of loses can be reduced if the company employs a management team that exercises visionary leadership, do things the way they are expected, understand the business and its key drivers, and locate resources according to appropriately laid down procedures. The new management should be able to undertake innovation duties accurately, adapt and respond to market changes appropriately, and anticipate problems before they happen. Moreover, it should handle problems that arise unexpectedly with sufficient care. Leaders that use these techniques are transformational (Bass and Riggio, 2006). They are the best group of leaders to save GSK from collapsing. The company pleaded guilty to almost 15 charges since it depended on transactional managers. GSK’s management failed to be responsible following inadequate appreciation of past mistakes. After pleading guilty to the initial charges, it met other numerous controversies that caused the company billions of dollars. Transformational leaders are good at learning from the past. To solve the challenges sufficiently, the company should employ transformational leaders (Pierce and Gardner, 2002). The frequent rate at which suits are filed against GSK demonstrates the inability of the current leaders to take charge of the company’s operations. GSK’s reaction to the actions of the advertising team also depicted the management as incapable of conveying its vision appropriately. The company argued in court that the error regarding the inaccurate contents of Ribena was based on a miscommunication from the advertising department. According to prominent leadership theories, an effective leadership must have control over its followers and develop proper communication channels. The leader must be able to share his/her vision with the entire team efficiently. Moreover, effective managers need to have the ability to switch flexibly from one model of management to another, depending on the needs of different people and the situation. Besides, effective leadership requires understanding of exceptiona l methods of influencing employees to operate according to laid down policies and regulations. The leader should earn the respect of other employees because of the effective ways of performing tasks (Thomas, n. d.). Notably, GSK’s management does not possess these qualities. The current leaders have failed to ensure that all internal processes of the company operate efficiently. There are several miscommunication cases from within. In addition, the leadership has failed to enhance external stability and efficiency in achievement of goals. GSK has not succeeded in meeting its financial goals, providing quality services, and addressing customer’s needs effectively. These are the roles of effective leaders (Field, Holden, and Lawlor, 2002). Additionally, GSK has failed to meet its key objectives due to the frequent settlement of heavy court fines. It has been using a lot of money to settle cases rather than initiate major developments and innovations. Apart from failure t o meet financial objectives, the company has failed to make use of its global resources to satisfy the tastes and preferences of its customers. The misinformation regarding the contents of Ribena shows that the company cannot satisfy the needs of its customers and therefore uses unfair means to make profits. The case depicted a picture that the company uses unfair trade mechanisms to take cash from the public. The cases, moreover, threatened to destroy the reputation of the company. Losing the trust of the public is one of the key factors that may lead to the closure of a company indefinitely. GSK ought to maintain cohesion with clientele and evolve successfully. Notably, the organisation uses the transactional model of leadership. The leadership has shown interest in maintaining stability by entering into joint ventures with other global companies. It has also invested heavily in acquisitions of new and improved facilities in the last ten years. Moreover, it has developed policies that take care of the interests of poor patients. The ventures and programs help the company to remain competitive globally. However, it has developed policies to promote changes within the organization. Despite providing cheap drugs to the poor and financing medical infrastructure in those regions, the culture of the company seem to remain targeted at making profits. It has impressive corporate missions, but it is at risk of falling prey to social evils. The shortcomings demonstrate lack of transformation qualities in the leaders. It is notable that the leaders take risk without taking adequate care (Ferran, and Salim, 2008). This has resulted into the erosion of the culture of respect for human rights. The company therefore needs a leader that possesses the appropriate skills and behavioural mannerism to correct the mistakes done in the past. Recommendations and Justification A Change in Leadership GSK’s new leaders should adopt appropriate leadership styles to eliminate a number of operational problems. The new leadership should have the quality to motivate followers to transcend self-interest and serve a higher level of ideals (Heizer and Render, 2004). This management should practise servant leadership in the company. This will strategically place the company to achieve its goals. Nevertheless, to be assured of the success, the company should employ leaders with the passion of transformation. Transformational leaders are commonly hired to revive companies that are at the verge of collapsing. They possess the ability to articulate compelling vision and influence others to sacrifice their interest for the sake of the society (Bass and Riggio, 2006). Justification for the Call for Change in Leadership Transformational leaders see themselves as agents of change. In addition, they believe in themselves. By employing such effective leaders, GSK will get the opportunity to improve its eroded culture. The recommended leadership will not maintain the status quo as commonly done by transactional leader. Commonly, they encourage innovation and develop original ideas that can solve the current evolving trade challenges that the company is facing. These leaders have high trust for their intuition. Transformational leaders encourage democratic rule but at the same time are well informed. They endeavour to create cohesion and improve quality of service provision. The leaders have the skills for instituting turn-around strategies in organizations that are approaching total collapse. The change in management will therefore help to eliminate reckless action done under the guise of risk taking management. This is because the leaders believe in taking action after engaging in careful deliberations and considerations. The new style of leadership will work towards using resources economically by making decisions that will bring a positive change within the company. Moreover, it will increase chances of the company to make more profits and increase its social value. An outstanding characteristic in transformational leaders is having a set of core values that tend to determine their own behaviours. They possess extraordinary cognitive skills. Since leaders’ skills and aspirations are reflected in their management styles, the company would develop exceptional policies to take care of anticipated and unanticipated risks (Bass and Riggio, 2006). The company’s current leadership does not demonstrate trust and faith in people. Research shows that transformational leaders do not only believe in people but also show sensitivity to their problems. The new style of leadership will therefore develop policies and put them into action (Bass and Riggio, 2006). GSK has attractive corporate mission statements. It manages several charity programs. However, the expected behaviour has nothing in common with the actual actions. This is because of poor leadership. The company does not show sensitivity to the people’s needs. I t constantly gives misleading information and engages in fraud. The occurrences portray the company as ruthless, a brand that is unhealthy for its success. Transformational leaders believe in creating an atmosphere that is conducive for living. The leadership can therefore create a marketable brand for the company. The leadership has the ability to use negative past experience to improve the company’s future operations. Transformational leaders believe that all past occurrences are useful for further learning. The dark past of the company can therefore become resourceful for improving performance (Cherry, 2002). Moreover, transformational leadership will help the company to save a lot of money. This is because they perform transactional behaviours, as well. The company needs transactional leaders, especially at lower management levels, and transformational leaders, at higher levels. Since transformational leaders can perform both roles, the company would benefit from the valu able services of the new management and improve efficiency most conveniently (Bass and Riggio, 2006). GSK cannot succeed if it fails to use the accurate methods of identifying leadership skills. There are several theories on how to identify skills in individual leaders (Fear, 1984). However, Robert Katz’s model that provides the ‘three skills approach is highly recommended for GSK. Katz suggested that success in leadership depends on technical, human, and conceptual skills. The mode illustrates that skills are measurable, as they are what leaders can accomplish while traits are not. On the other hand, traits represent who leaders are. The company should use this model to evaluate leaders’ skills. The model identifies technical skills, which help in production of the actual products. It also identifies human skills. Leaders with enhanced human skills have the ability to work with others harmoniously. The company also needs leaders with conceptual skills. The skill s make leaders competent. Katz’s model can help it to identify employee who have these skills, and therefore, have the ability to work with different ideologies and concepts (Northouse, 2013). At the same time, GSK should give priority to identification of exceptional leadership skills, some of which are not measurable using the model. Transformational and charismatic leaders have high levels of emotional intelligence that should be assessed as well. Conclusion GlaxoSmithKline has the potential to achieve it global objectives. It began operating in 2000 and about ten years later, it has expanded in all key strategic global markets. This indicates that GSK has sufficient resources at its disposal. The company also has impressive relationship with global companies, such as Pfizer. The warm relationship helped the companies to agree to enter into a joint global relationship. GSK therefore is a viable company. A management team that has the ability to not only manage the resource s effectively but also transform the company can solve its problems. The company should employ a team of transformational leaders. Transactional leaders are also helpful for the companies’ success, especially at lower management levels. These leaders are competent in managing organizations to perfect their current operational standards. They cannot save a company on the verge of collapse. The company can train them to gain insight on the desirable course of action. It can transfer leaders with innate transactional qualities to Middle Level Management offices (Fear, 1984). GSK should develop methods of identifying transformational leaders preciously. One of the available options it should consider adopting is the Katz model. It is straightforward and easy to use. The model also identifies major management skills in individuals. References Bass, B. M., Riggio, R. E. (2006).Transformational Leadership (2nd ed.). Mahwah, N. J. Cherry, K. Essay Sample on Vampirism in #8220;The Fall of the House of Usher#8221;

Essay Sample on Vampirism in #8220;The Fall of the House of Usher#8221; Free sample essay on Vampirism in The Fall of the House of Usher: Originally written in 1839, Edgar Allan Poes The Fall of the House of Usher has been the object of many literary questions and criticisms. One of the most interesting questions ever raised would undoubtedly pertain to the illness that Madeline Usher suffered. Many theories have been put forth about the disease of Lady Madeline [that] had long baffled the skill of her physicians. (Poe 786). The most obvious conclusion on this disease is that Madeline Usher suffered from vampirism. Although Poe never actually said outright that this is what affected Madeline, he did give enough evidence throughout the story for it to be a possibility and when paired with the society-of-the-time’s view of death and gothic literature, vampirism is the most logical answer. Most of the writing of Poe’s literary works occurred in the middle of the 1800s. â€Å"At the heart of nineteenth century romantic cult of the dead, lay a profound ambivalence towards the dead body† (Pike Par. 2). This enabled Poe to do many stories that dealt with the dying or deceased. It was a â€Å"hot† topic. â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher†, however, is slightly different. The â€Å"dead,† that America loved at the time, had a new side. Since, according to Kendall, â€Å"Both male and female vampires abounded in literature by the time [Poe] published his contributions to the genre in 1839† (Par. 2) the backbone, the popularity of vampirism, was already in place for the short story to be accepted in the society. In short, by afflicting Madeline with â€Å"living† death, Poe not only appealed to the audience of those infatuated with death in general, but he was also able to target those that were interested in the darker, more gothic side, as well. There are many characteristics to look for when deciding if one is a vampire or not. Roxana Stuart’s Stage Blood: Vampires of the 19th Century Stage explains the traits of vampirism. For example, â€Å"Vampires can be either victims of a contagious disease, similar to rabies, or they can be a separate species from man; they are not necessarily connected with Satan and the powers of hell† (Qtd. in Ashley 15). This is a possible solution of how the vampirism first got into the family. Poe makes it clear throughout the story that Madeline’s condition is not a new one to the family and the disease is something of a family condition. Roderick Usher, Madeline’s twin brother, states that the illness is â€Å"a constitutional and family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy† (Poe 767). This allows the first connection between vampirism and the Ushers. Vampirism, as previously stated, can be a race entirely different f rom humans, which can be taken to mean that the condition is a family flaw. Obviously, through Roderick’s explanation, it is clear that Madeline is not the first of the Usher to suffer from this strange malady. Later in the story, Poe leads the reader to another possible solution on how the condition arrived into the family. This explanation is given cryptically through the recital of a favored poem of Roderick’s, which states: â€Å"But evil things, in robes of sorrow,/Assailed the monarch’s high estate;/(Ah, let us mourn, for never morrow/Shall dawn upon him, desolate!)/And, round about his home, the glory/That blushed and bloomed/Is but a dim-remembered story/Of the old time entomed† (Poe 770). Obviously, Poe is telling the reader that at some time during the history of the Ushers, vampires entered the house and attacked its inhabitants, thus leading to the disease that affected the later generations. Another trait of a vampire is that â€Å"They have superhuman strength, and are most powerful at night† (Ashley 15-16). As Poe’s short story neared the end, we find Madeline, who was encrypted several days earlier, breaking free from her burial chamber. Poe describes this vault as being â€Å"entirely without means of admission for light† and with a â€Å"door of massive iron† (Poe 772). He goes on to say that this door was difficult for even the men to close because of â€Å"It’s immense weight† (Poe 772). How could it be possible then for this woman to not only break free from her confinement of her coffin, but also open the huge and heavy weight of the door? Take into consideration as well, that her disease caused a â€Å"gradual wasting away† and that she had not eaten in several days (Poe 768). These facts make it abundantly clear that something much more was occurring within Madeline. One could say that the ability to open the do or came from the fear of being â€Å"buried† alive, but desperation can only add so much to one’s physical strength. Her being able to open the door obviously demonstrates that she had strength that was superhuman. Although it is unclear if Roderick was actually afflicted with the disease, or merely afflicted by Madeline, it is clear that Madeline exuded a strange and eerie presence. As the narrator talks to Roderick, he catches sight of Madeline passing through another room: â€Å"I regarded her with utter astonishment not unmingled with dread† (Poe 768). This type of reaction is actually quite common when a normal person is in the presence of a vampire. Although variations of the reaction can be found, vampires incense feelings of things askew, eeriness and spookiness, akin to what people would call the feeling of their grave being walked over, within the normal person, especially if the vampire is unaware of being watched, as in the case with the narrator and Madeline. Normally however, a vampire will wrap a psychic â€Å"shroud† around itself so that the normal person is unable to detect anything out of the ordinary. At one point in the story, Roderick states that the cause of his illness can be traced to his sister, saying â€Å"much of the peculiar gloom which thus afflicted him could be traced to a more natural and far more palpable origin- to the severe and long-continued illness- indeed to the evidently approaching dissolution- of a tenderly beloved sister† (Poe 767-768). While this can be taken sarcastically, it is much more likely that it should be taken for face value. What Roderick’s message reveals here is that the cause of his illness can be traced to his sister. Apparently, her appearance affects him just as it does the narrator and it is highly likely that Roderick is her sole food source. This contributes to the symptoms of Roderick’s illness, which included â€Å"cadaverousness of complexion† and â€Å"ghastly pallor of the skin† (Poe 766). However, this does not necessarily mean that she was literally feeding off his blood, which is the most comm on thought in association of vampire food. In the case of the Ushers, it is much more likely that Madeline was feeding off Roderick’s psyche. She was draining him of life through a â€Å"vampiric exchange of energy [that] occurred between the siblings† (The Vampire Book 527). However, this was draining was also starting to occur on the narrator as well, as shown later in the story. He began to develop some of the same mental symptoms as Roderick, saying at one point that he could almost feel the change in himself, wondering if it was not merely the atmosphere of the house that caused Roderick to carry such an illness. In conclusion, Poe’s vampire motif in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher† is not just hypothetical- it is provable. Of course, many would argue that since it does not follow all traditional means of vampirism, then it could not possibly be true. However, it can be reasoned that Poe was not looking to meet all the regular vampire requirements or even create a story that follows basic and traditional vampire lore. Instead, it can be safely understood that the vampirism in this story was used to reach a deeper level- a more advanced reader, if you will. One must take into consideration that during the nineteenth century, many literary works were being produced in this genre. After all, the population loved the dead. Poe, being who he was, wanted to not only â€Å"jump on the bandwagon†, but make it his own as well. In creating the characters found in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher†, he did just that.

Nutritional assessment report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Nutritional assessment report - Essay Example Two types of methods have been used to measure food intake: precise weighed food record and 24-hour recall methods. 25 persons have been selected as sample size for the analysis BMR and total energy expenditure have also been found out. For understanding the nature and interrelationship between the variables, statistical tools like descriptive statistics, correlation and regression methods have been used. . The regression results show that the interrelationship between energy intake and total energy expenditure is statistically significant and the weighed energy intake seems to have strong relationship with TEE while that of recall energy intake seems to be insignificant. The energy expenditure indicators of BMR and total energy expenditure has also got significant statistical relationship and the total energy expenditure seems to be highly dependent on the BMR. Comparisons with FAO estimates, it is seen that our sample population does not have required energy expenditure as suggeste d by FAO. The BMR of our sample population also seems to be lower than that of FAO estimates. Introduction Nutritional status or energy of any person is measured in terms calories and calorie is hence known as the currency of nutrition and energy (Prentice, 1997). Energy keeps any mammal warm and drives all the activities of life. Energy is derived from the process of ‘chemical combustion’ of food intake which requires oxygen and produces carbon dioxide and water. Sufficient supply of food intake is needed for this process (Titchenal, 1988). The energy component of the food can be divided into chemical energy and metabolizable energy. Chemical energy of the food is the total energy which is liberated if it is combusted in oxygen. That is, its heat of combustion is normally the chemical energy and it can simply measured in a bomb calorimeter. The chemical energy is otherwise known as the gross energy (Durnin and Passmore, 1967; Cox 2005). The metabolic part of the total energy of the food is known as the megabolizable energy. Due to several reasons, a portion of the total energy of food intake would not be available for the body metabolism. The portion of the total energy which is digested and absorbed by the body is megabolizable energy or digestible energy. In the dietary and energy expenditure discussions, this metabolizable or digestible energy becomes relevant (Prentice, 1997; Gibney etal 2002; Lee and Nieman ,2003; Gibson ,2005). Objective and Methodology The present paper intends to make a strong understanding and conceptual discussion on the concepts energy, energy balance, energy requirements and energy expenditure. The interrelationship between food intake and food energy expenditure has also been analyzed in the paper. Hence, the main objectives of the paper are: 1) to integrate the understanding on the concepts like measures of intake, energy balance, requirements and expenditure 2) to give practical experience in methods of measurement s of food intake and expenditure 3) to examine the interrelationship between these variables. Methodology For achieving the above said objectives, a concrete and brief discussion has been done on the concepts like measures of food intake, energy balance and requirements and energy expenditure. Practical experiments have been done on the measurements of food intake and energy expenditure. Two types of methods have been used to measure food intake: precise weighed food record and

Business Proposal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Business Proposal - Essay Example The aim is to provide coffee services. Coffitoff will start its online business from England mainly London and then at later stage expand its market to other parts of the UK. London is the business hub of the UK and it is there where the product will be tested. The business will be started as a sole proprietor and if need arises it will go public to attain funds. The coffee beans are exported from other countries. This increases the cost of the coffee in the UK as compared to the American or Asian countries (Casenotes, 2004). Coffee is not easily affordable in the UK. The global recession that took place in 2008 has made consumers very careful of how they spend their money. Coffee is regarded by many as a product of surplus need rather than an immediate one. People in the UK can go without drinking it (Ireland, 2009). Consumers look to save every penny in these harsh economic times. As newer coffee machines are coming into the market it is becoming easier for people to purchase and keep these machines in their home. It is cheaper to make coffee at home rather than ordering online (Hashemi, 2002). The target market for Coffitoff comprises of business professionals who find it hard to stop by a coffee shop for a cup of coffee. Recent research shows that 60% of all business executives would like to have a cup of coffee at least once a day in London (Richardson, 2014). Out of the 60% only about 18% of the professionals make it to the coffee shops. This means that 42% of the people are deprived of this need as they do not have time for coffee. Coffitoff will look to cater this segment of people (Richardson, 2014). 1. Rivalry: Online business is still very new and is growing. At the moment, there are over a dozen online coffee shops in the UK. Brand identification is very important to maintain the rivalry and market position between coffee shops (Pride, 2008). 2. Threat of substitutes: The threat of

Down the River Essay Example for Free

Down the River Essay Edward Abbeys essay Down the River reveals his strong belief that the existence of life revolves around nature itself. Abbey conveys these views through syntax, imagery, and his choice of structure. Abbey’s varying detail and syntax in the first half of the passage conveys an amazement toward nature. He states while gazing at the lion that there was a â€Å"mutual curiosity: [he] felt more wonder than fear†. His unexpected reaction to the mountain lion when they shared â€Å"mutual curiosity† implies that man is not alone in this journey towards knowledge, and there is a deep connection between man and nature. He varies the syntax from short to complex sentences with distinct differences in clauses. He states that later on they â€Å"see no mountain lions,† and the following sentence in a series presents all of the other wildlife that has been observed in great detail instead of the lion. He describes these plants and animals with enthusiasm and also calls Aravaipa â€Å"full of life† and extremely â€Å"beautiful†. The impression is that even though the lion that drew the explorer in is nowhere to be seen, there is still a vast amount of beauty in the desert. The structure is meant to contrast the two types of nature, urban nature and nature in Aravaipa. We see an immediate switch in tone when Abby says, â€Å"We stumble homeward over the stones, and through the anklebone-chilling water. † Abbey displays a hint of bitterness towards his home that is so bad even the journey to get there is torturous. He discusses the stars and how they seem to fade when he leaving the desert, as if the world he is used to has no stars, no beauty, no life. Abby then states that the memories of the beautiful desert are enough to keep him satisfied for days to survive the â€Å"urban life†. Nature is so rich in details and relationships and so wonderful and mysterious that it is impossible to completely understand it. This incomprehensibility can provide an unlimited source of learning that will eventually redeem us from a lifeless urban existence.

Power Of The Few Over The Many :: essays research papers

The Eleventh Commandment portrayed the state church as being the supreme dictator. It is through the eleventh commandment that the church held it's power and control over the masses. Without the church and it's leaders to guide the masses, their society would have collapsed. However, compared to Brave New World, the whole society is conditioned to "work for everyone else"(Huxley 67) by the abuse and daily consumption of soma. Without the drug called soma, their society would have also collapsed due to withdrawal symptoms. The underlying reality between the two societies is that the masses are manipulated, controlled, and brainwashed, without resistance, to obey and follow their leaders through various methods of enforcement. The Brave New World is controlled by a select few who call themselves Resident Controllers and Directors. These elite few are able to control the production and selection process of societies masses. Mustapha Mond, Resident Controller for Western Europe, and the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, oversee the conditioning of embryos. Their powers and control over these particular jurisdictions gave them great power, and with that the ability to manipulate others. "'You ass'... said the Director,... 'Hasn't it occurred to you that an Epsilon embryo must have an Epsilon environment as well as an Epsilon heredity'"(Huxley 23). Through a hierarchy of Alaphas and Betas down to the lower cast Epsilon, everyone was suited for their job. The Director however, through his position of authority, was able to "... condition the masses to hate the country,"(Huxley 30). In doing so, the Director succeeds in creating an obedient society, which obeys and bows to every whim of his commands. The Resident Controller and Director were two authoritative figures that were able to control whomever and whatever each person worked at, even before they were conceived. Each cast had pre-conceived morals preached to them through conditioning, and to this end effectively brainwashed to the point of utter obedience. The outcome of this brainwashing by conditioning sets forth a society that exists in two tiers, the guardians and the domesticated animals. [who? why?->BNW] [who? why?->11th C] The church and it's head archbishops are able to control and manipulate the masses in North America by preaching the eleventh commandment through strict laws and enforcement practices. The eleventh commandment ordained that every man and women must be fruitful and multiply. Because of this commandment and of the militant ruling religionist enforcement, North America alone had four billion people, and yet the church continued to preach the eleventh commandment and it's practices. The competition between continents was the driving force behind the eleventh commandment. If it was not the competitiveness between ruling church states,

Deception Point Page 1

Prologue Death, in this forsaken place, could come in countless forms. Geologist Charles Brophy had endured the savage splendor of this terrain for years, and yet nothing could prepare him for a fate as barbarous and unnatural as the one about to befall him. As Brophy's four huskies pulled his sled of geologic sensing equipment across the tundra, the dogs suddenly slowed, looking skyward. â€Å"What is it, girls?† Brophy asked, stepping off the sled. Beyond the gathering storm clouds, a twin-rotor transport helicopter arched in low, hugging the glacial peaks with military dexterity. That's odd, he thought. He never saw helicopters this far north. The aircraft landed fifty yards away, kicking up a stinging spray of granulated snow. His dogs whined, looking wary. When the chopper doors slid open, two men descended. They were dressed in full-weather whites, armed with rifles, and moved toward Brophy with urgent intent. â€Å"Dr. Brophy?† one called. The geologist was baffled. â€Å"How did you know my name? Who are you?† â€Å"Take out your radio, please.† â€Å"I'm sorry?† â€Å"Just do it.† Bewildered, Brophy pulled his radio from his parka. â€Å"We need you to transmit an emergency communique. Decrease your radio frequency to one hundred kilohertz.† One hundred kilohertz? Brophy felt utterly lost. Nobody can receive anything that low. â€Å"Has there been an accident?† The second man raised his rifle and pointed it at Brophy's head. â€Å"There's no time to explain. Just do it.† Trembling, Brophy adjusted his transmission frequency. The first man now handed him a note card with a few lines typed on it. â€Å"Transmit this message. Now.† Brophy looked at the card. â€Å"I don't understand. This information is incorrect. I didn't-â€Å" The man pressed his rifle hard against the geologist's temple. Brophy's voice was shaking as he transmitted the bizarre message. â€Å"Good,† the first man said. â€Å"Now get yourself and your dogs into the chopper.† At gunpoint, Brophy maneuvered his reluctant dogs and sled up a skid ramp into the cargo bay. As soon as they were settled, the chopper lifted off, turning westward. â€Å"Who the hell are you!† Brophy demanded, breaking a sweat inside his parka. And what was the meaning of that message! The men said nothing. As the chopper gained altitude, the wind tore through the open door. Brophy's four huskies, still rigged to the loaded sled, were whimpering now. â€Å"At least close the door,† Brophy demanded. â€Å"Can't you see my dogs are frightened!† The men did not respond. As the chopper rose to four thousand feet, it banked steeply out over a series of ice chasms and crevasses. Suddenly, the men stood. Without a word, they gripped the heavily laden sled and pushed it out the open door. Brophy watched in horror as his dogs scrambled in vain against the enormous weight. In an instant the animals disappeared, dragged howling out of the chopper. Brophy was already on his feet screaming when the men grabbed him. They hauled him to the door. Numb with fear, Brophy swung his fists, trying to fend off the powerful hands pushing him outward. It was no use. Moments later he was tumbling toward the chasms below. 1 Toulos Restaurant, adjacent to Capitol Hill, boasts a politically incorrect menu of baby veal and horse carpaccio, making it an ironic hotspot for the quintessential Washingtonian power breakfast. This morning Toulos was busy – a cacophony of clanking silverware, espresso machines, and cellphone conversations. The maitre d' was sneaking a sip of his morning Bloody Mary when the woman entered. He turned with a practiced smile. â€Å"Good morning,† he said. â€Å"May I help you?† The woman was attractive, in her mid-thirties, wearing gray, pleated flannel pants, conservative flats, and an ivory Laura Ashley blouse. Her posture was straight – chin raised ever so slightly – not arrogant, just strong. The woman's hair was light brown and fashioned in Washington's most popular style – the â€Å"anchor-woman† – a lush feathering, curled under at the shoulders†¦ long enough to be sexy, but short enough to remind you she was probably smarter than you. â€Å"I'm a little late,† the woman said, her voice unassuming. â€Å"I have a breakfast meeting with Senator Sexton.† The maitre d' felt an unexpected tingle of nerves. Senator Sedgewick Sexton. The senator was a regular here and currently one of the country's most famous men. Last week, having swept all twelve Republican primaries on Super Tuesday, the senator was virtually guaranteed his party's nomination for President of the United States. Many believed the senator had a superb chance of stealing the White House from the embattled President next fall. Lately Sexton's face seemed to be on every national magazine, his campaign slogan plastered all across America: â€Å"Stop spending. Start mending.† â€Å"Senator Sexton is in his booth,† the maitre d' said. â€Å"And you are?† â€Å"Rachel Sexton. His daughter.† How foolish of me, he thought. The resemblance was quite apparent. The woman had the senator's penetrating eyes and refined carriage – that polished air of resilient nobility. Clearly the senator's classic good looks had not skipped generations, although Rachel Sexton seemed to carry her blessings with a grace and humility her father could learn from. â€Å"A pleasure to have you, Ms. Sexton.† As the maitre d' led the senator's daughter across the dining area, he was embarrassed by the gauntlet of male eyes following her†¦ some discreet, others less so. Few women dined at Toulos and even fewer who looked like Rachel Sexton. â€Å"Nice body,† one diner whispered. â€Å"Sexton already find himself a new wife?† â€Å"That's his daughter, you idiot,† another replied. The man chuckled. â€Å"Knowing Sexton, he'd probably screw her anyway.† When Rachel arrived at her father's table, the senator was on his cellphone talking loudly about one of his recent successes. He glanced up at Rachel only long enough to tap his Cartier and remind her she was late. I missed you, too, Rachel thought. Her father's first name was Thomas, although he'd adopted his middle name long ago. Rachel suspected it was because he liked the alliteration. Senator Sedgewick Sexton. The man was a silver-haired, silver-tongued political animal who had been anointed with the slick look of soap opera doctor, which seemed appropriate considering his talents of impersonation. â€Å"Rachel!† Her father clicked off his phone and stood to kiss her cheek. â€Å"Hi, Dad.† She did not kiss him back. â€Å"You look exhausted.† And so it begins, she thought. â€Å"I got your message. What's up?† â€Å"I can't ask my daughter out for breakfast?† Rachel had learned long ago her father seldom requested her company unless he had some ulterior motive. Sexton took a sip of coffee. â€Å"So, how are things with you?† â€Å"Busy. I see your campaign's going well.† â€Å"Oh, let's not talk business.† Sexton leaned across the table, lowering his voice. â€Å"How's that guy at the State Department I set you up with?† Rachel exhaled, already fighting the urge to check her watch. â€Å"Dad, I really haven't had time to call him. And I wish you'd stop trying to-â€Å" â€Å"You've got to make time for the important things, Rachel. Without love, everything else is meaningless.† A number of comebacks came to mind, but Rachel chose silence. Being the bigger person was not difficult when it came to her father. â€Å"Dad, you wanted to see me? You said this was important.†

The Female Who Is Twenty One Years Of Age - 929 Words

The next interviewee is a female who is forty-one years of age. Let us begin with, her most pleasant and positive healthcare experience, which was with a Breast Oncologist, Dr. Howard Burstein at Dana Farber. The staff at Dana Farber goes over and beyond to make every one of their patients feel comfortable. The staff welcomes the patients in a cordial way and helps them with any given question or concern. The registration (front desk) provided her with a badge to wear after checking in for her appointment. This badge can locate your whereabouts for the staff. This is to a great degree accommodating and the staff informs the patient if the doctor they are seeing is running behind, this allows the patient to get a bite to eat at the†¦show more content†¦This provides comfort, which aided her through such a difficult time. The medical professionals were involved, as far as calling and emailing to see how she was feeling during chemotherapy treatments. Having assigned medical pe rsonnel close by during the duration treatments was beneficial because they would get to know you so if you have a reaction to your treatment they can detect it instantly. (D. Walenten, 2014) The most unpleasant healthcare experience was with a plastic surgeon at Faulkner Hospital. This was her first time at this healthcare professional’s office, in which she was visiting for a biopsy on a lump located in her right breast. The reason for this visit being the worst experience was not completely to do with the hospital or its staff; it was the consequences of the biopsy. She was exceptionally apprehensive and on edge while she was, sitting tight waiting to be seen for the biopsy procedure and the staff was not very comforting. (D. Walenten, 2014) She was feeling a range of emotions due to fear and she was in a sense powerless. This is the point at which the staff ought to be consoling for the patient’s sake. The staff member lacked empathy, which is critical. (Communicating about health., 2014) The nurse practitioner then proceeded to call her and bring her to an examination room, where the biopsy took place. The nurse practitioner was
